A bittersweet victory for the Cards tonight as they win the battle with a Kolten Wong walk off home run, while losing catcher Yadier Molina to a strained left oblique. What will this mean for the redbirds if their most prized possession does not return to post season play? Well, without getting all sabermetric on you, just fine. The Giants are proof of that as they have shown that they can do a lot of damage without their star center fielder, Angel Pagan. And the beauty about baseball is that when a crucial piece of the puzzle is missing, that’s when the unspoken heroes speak up. Tonight, St Louis rookie Oscar Taveras hit a pinch homer to tie it up in the 7th while San Francisco’s Matt Duffy’s head’s up pinch running on a wild pitch evened the score in the 9th. What both of these teams need to do to advance to the next round is get their bullpens in order, because the Cardinals are hitting an awful lot of home runs, and the Giants are sneaking many hits through a lot of holes. And franchise players behind the plate and in the field aren’t going to mean jack if late inning pitching continues to be a problem.
